New sensor principle for measuring NOx emissions

Exhaust emission limits have become increasingly stringent in recent years, which has made it more and more difficult to conduct reliable and cost-effective screening of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. For this reason, six medium-sized companies have come together to jointly develop a new type of NOx sensor for use with diesel engines in mobile machinery. The development is based on an electrochemical cell, whose simplified structure enables rapid response times, while avoiding cross-sensitivities. Using this sensor principle, it is possible to control exhaust emission aftertreatment systems more efficiently and to ensure secure compliance with the strict emissions standards of the future. A reversing assistant system based on a visual man-machine interface was developed in collaboration with the University of Koblenz-Landau to support vehicles attempting to drive in reverse with attached trailers. The system is designed for retrofitting and can be used independently of vehicle and trailer model.
There are many drivers who have no problem driving a vehicle and trailer combination forwards but who find reversing difficult, with the result that they are unable to confidently manoeuvre the vehicle-trainer unit in a backwards direction. There are several reasons for this difficulty:

  • When driving in reverse, the steering motion is in opposition to the direction of travel, which can easily lead to confusion. The effect of the steering wheel movement cannot be recognised or predicted with certainty.
  • A vehicle-trailer combination in reverse motion constitutes an unstable system. If the driver oversteers, the interruption to the force axis causes the trailer to position itself transversely to the direction of travel. It is then necessary to drive forwards again to remedy the situation.

The aim was to develop an assistance system that enables even inexperienced drivers to reverse safely and accurately with a rigid drawbar trailer attached to the vehicle. It does this by displaying the trajectories within the real-time image produced by the reversing camera attached to the trailer, on a mobile output device. This enables the driver, moving slowly or even at a standstill, to constantly monitor his steering and the anticipated trajectory of the trailer on the screen and to correct himself accordingly.

Now you are able to check status data anywhere in the world at any time. This system permits global querying of operating data, either through the GSM network, which is available at virtually any location, or through the Internet. Both manual querying and automatic transmission are supported, and above all, it also enables direct alarm activation. Besides having control functions available, it is now possible to conduct modern and cost-effective fleet management by means of GPS.
